This is my big adventure at Pune.

I was eagerly waiting for Friday to come. Reason: This time it was a holiday and I would be having a long weekend. The occasion was 15th August ’08, The Indian Independence Day. There are no special celebrations here in Maharashtra as there are in Delhi. I was looking forward to planning a trip to someplace with friends. Chain mails were circulated and numerous plans were discussed with friends from my different circles. The response was not as enthusiastic and Friday was approaching fast. At last only four of us remained in the question, me, my two roomies and one of there friend. It was looking impossible.

On Thursday night we were finally discussing what to do, I was disheartened and thought it would not be fun, with just the four of us. But fun was not what was going to happen in the next two days. I wanted to go with a big group and enjoy the day with a bunch of friends but all my options were closed and I was left with no better choice. Still the cya was not about friends and fun but it was about adventure. The adventure that can be described briefly as “We started along a road curiously to see where it ends, we touched the shore and returned back.”

We decided to carry on with our plans even if no one else joins. Four of us were on two bikes and started our journey early in the day. We assembled at Chandni Chowk on Bombay-Pune highway and started our journey. I tripped my bike’s meter and set it to zero. The weather was fine with dark clouds above us and a clean rain washed road. We expected rain and so we had our rain coats and extra pair of clothes packed in our bags. Shortly it started to drizzle. We were about 10 kms from Pune. The rain was not a deterrent as we were all packed in our rain coats and had helmets on. We were moving towards Paud. The first stop was a beautiful scenery which was crafted as if was made out of a painting by an artist of great skill. Looking at the scene, it was a complete picture. It was like in a child’s sketchbook there were mountains covered with black clouds on top, a small river  flowing through, a little temple near by surrounded by rice fields and pure nature all around. It was a great view.

We left from there after taking some snaps. Next stop was at 21 kms , Me and Akash were ahead of the other two and thus had the liberty of stopping anywhere. We felt hungry and stopped to wait for them at some tea stalls that came at an intersection. This was a good place as well. Here were huge trees there. It was still drizzling a bit and we ate hot wadapaavs. The breakfast tasted so good and you can not ask for anything better on a chilly rainy day. By this time Sandeep and Ashutosh were also there and they also ate and had tea. Satisfied, we moved ahead.

Next stop was at 31 kms in my trip meter. There were many people who had parked their vehicles there and a lot of crowd was gathered around few tea stalls. We stopped by to see what the spot was. We parked the bikes and walked a bit to see a huge waterfall where people were bathing and enjoying. It was raining modestly so we could not take pictures of it but it was truly a nice place to enjoy. Many youngsters were busy climbing up the rocks and get their pictures clicked off showing their courage and some showing their masculinity. We could not have much fun there as we had a long distance to travel which would be difficult if we were solely wet. We started our bikes and moved on, slowly enjoying the view.

By the time we had traveled 41 kms we were riding adjacent to Mulshi dam. The dam was very vast and filled to its full capacity it seemed endless. We were also lucky to see the dam overflowing. The water was gushing out from the top of its gates and the flow was tremendous. We were looking at it from a great distance still it was a bit fearsome. We were enjoying the rain, thanks to the raincoats and the helmet we were still dry on the inside.

The rain was fading and it finally stopped at a little distance. This was the most amazing thing I had seen till now on this trip. Here the waterfall was gigantic, the waterfall was so big that we were unable to see the top of it. It was all covered with clouds and it seemed like the water is directly coming out of the clouds. We tried hard to see the top even zoomed our camera to look out for its origin, but no luck. People were there on the waterfall at a lower step. It was a two stepped waterfall and the water was flowing under the road we were standing upon. Mesmerized by the view we moved on excitedly. We were moving on the ghats and the road was descending, circling it. A little bit later we were again at the same waterfall. It took us a minute to figure out that it was the same water that was flowing under the road above is falling again and again flowing under the road we were standing on. This was awesome, and it was not yet over, we again circled the ghat and descended back to the same waterfall. This was an awesome experience and since we had no idea of this it felt even more wonderful. On the course of this ghat named Pirangut we witnessed not less than 10 major waterfalls. At every place there were people enjoying and playing with water. After a little distance we were on the opposite hill from where we could see all these waterfalls in one view. This was equally wonderful and now we were able to grasp the beauty of all of them at once. I had measured the distance of each stop we took and coincidently the figures were 31km, 41,km 51km, 61km and then 71km. By the last waterfall we had traveled 74 kms.

We reached Vile and from there onwards the journey wasn’t that wet. The sceneries we saw where a treat to the eye. I was trying to capture them in my memory. The road was perfectly smooth and clean, this added to the beauty of the nature around it. On our one side was the valley with distant hills covered with greenery and on other side were rice fields and beautiful farms. The green color was very soothing to the eyes and the air was so fresh that I was taking deep breaths to fill my lungs with it. The road swirling like a snake was too smooth to ride on. Slowly ascending and descending turns were adding to the driving pleasure. The trees were at there best and the flora was also at its full blossom.

We stooped at one such place where there was a small miniature waterfall flowing. I had seen this scenery in many paintings where an artist imagines a small flow of water surrounded by colorful flower plants and plush green grass. It would have been foolish to miss such a view, it was so serene. It started to rain, we were clicking some snaps there and we had to move on again putting our raincoats.

The beauty of the nature was at its best throughout the route. We stopped at as many locations we could and tried to fill the colors into our eyes. We went inside a garden that was on the way. The garden was separated by the road by a stone boundary. On top of the stone boundary there were bushes that had horns to keep the animals and trespassers away. It had a door made of bamboo loosely hung to allow anyone to enter. This was the most beautiful place I have ever been so far. I can try to explain my experience but I am almost sure that I will fail this attempt. The garden had fresh green grass equally grown and evenly spread. The landscape was slowly rising towards the left and then sloping down. A small pagdandi was leading towards a corner where there were four trees on a side, placed as if trying to make a square, with a fifth tree in the centre. The tree at the centre was the oldest and the biggest with a circular pavement around it made of rocks. Even the area over the rocks had soft green grass and some little wild flowers blossomed there. Just at a few steps from these trees on the right there was a rice field. The partially grown rice crop was moving back and forth with the wind synchronously. The smooth blowing cool breeze and the dark clouds above us were adding to the scenic beauty of the place.

Continuing our journey from here we reached a junction from where Diveagar started. We had lunch at a local restaurant and moved on with filled stomach. For the last part of the ride, we were moving along the sea shore. At a higher level, we could see a distant horizon. We stopped at a place to have a pleasant look around and have some snaps of us by the roadside. This place was protruding out to the sea and we were surrounded by it on the three sides. The sea water had come up during the high tide and we could see many trees submerged into the water. Looking at the sea we felt satisfied as we had reached our destination and were eager to put our feet to bed.

We went on and reached Diveagar. Deciding to lodge here we went to see MTDC guest houses. These are made exclusively near the sea shore and this is the closest you can get. Surrounded by the tall coconut trees and just next to the beach, this was the perfect place to put up for the night. The cottages, well separated from each other, were a perfect place for couples to enjoy their privacy amidst nature. Probably the MTDC management is also aware of the same fact and have placed an exorbitant price of Rs 2000 per day. Now we were neither couples nor excessively paid professionals, so we opted the other option of renting out place for a night. In Diveagar, people rent out rooms in there houses to tourists. Rs 350 a night was so very affordable to spend for us. We had a nice room and it had everything that we needed, the beddings, mosquito repellant, bed covers and pillows.

The clothes we had brought were all drenched up due to the heavy rain we encountered on our way. We spread our wet clothes here and there and went on to see the beaches. Diveagar is a black soil beach and the sand is very soft. The sand felt very soft moving with naked feet. We were keeping a distant from the waves so as to keep ourselves from getting our jeans wet. But we were not destined to remain dry and on the course of our long walk, it again started to rain heavily. We started walking back to our bikes briskly and came back to the cottage with some mixture and snack to feed our stomachs until dinner was served. We had food at around 9 after a long wait we were really hungry. The food was awesome, but we missed on the special non-veg that is famous for Diveagar.

Tired of the journey, we slept like a log that night. To reach Pune before dark we had to leave the place around 12 noon, so we woke up early and finished our routines. Paid the rent and moved on with our bags packed, to the other nearby destinations. Thanks to god it was not raining and the weather was on our side. We went to Harihareshwar and Sriwardhan beach. Sriwardhan was a white sand beach and we spent a little time there. Starting with a horse cart ride, we walked on the beach collecting some shells and stones. The waves were nice and high and the beach was also not crowded. This beach was just partitioned by a hill from the Diveagar beach hardly 1Km away from the later, but we had to travel around 17 Km to reach here. The ride was comfortable and very scenic.

We moved towards Harihareshwar now, this was also a similar ride. The beach was hardly 1 Km as it seemed but we had to travel 13 Km to reach here. We had our breakfast and on a local shop. The shopkeeper was packaging freshly made desert of some kind. It was very similar to milkcake as we normally know. After tasting a single piece of the hot freshly made desert, we ordered 5 plates of it, one by one, and ate them until the shopkeeper was done with the packaging and there was no more of it left.

Reaching the beach, we saw a temple that was just adjacent to the shore. We went in the temple and sounded our prayers. This was a rocky beach and the waves were splashing on the rocks like anything. Concrete walls are made and well constructed stairs are there to sit and have the waves occasionally come high enough to hit you. Huge waves were hitting the wall and rocks as it was high tide. We sat on the stairs and just gazed upon the oncoming waves. Hearing the sounds of splashes and seeking distant boats in the sea as they disappeared and reappeared. People were taking photographs and dared to get closed to the waves, just to get a good shot. The waves, as if playing with people, were coming high at certain times and playing with the visitors. It was a delight to sit there and enjoy everything going on around. We sat here for around an hour and decided to leave at 12 to continue our journey back to Pune. The trip had ended but the fun didn’t end here as we stopped at many places on our return too. Everything is to be shared here but I guess the fun already described is enough for one go… if need be, then I will also pen down our journey back to Pune where we had tea breaks, scenery breaks and photo breaks too… not to forget the crocodile we saw at a small lake and the lovers point on the Saturday evening with couples hanging out and making a beautiful romantic scene to watch. Do send me any queries, questions or feedbacks. I would be happy to receive remarks and suggestions on this piece of writing.
